BCBSAZ Health Choice knows there is nothing more important than early detection in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Breast cancer is sometimes found after symptoms appear, but many women with breast cancer have no symptoms. This is why regular breast cancer screening is so important and why we are inviting members to attend one of our upcoming breast cancer screening events. Members between the ages of 50 to 74 receive a $50 reward through our BCBSAZ Health Choice Healthy Rewards program.

There are many risk factors for breast cancer, but the most common risk is simply being a woman. Fortunately, current treatments can be very effective. In fact, the 5-year survival rate can be as high as 98% if breast cancer is detected early.
The American Cancer Society recommends the following methods to help detect breast cancer early:
- Women between 40 and 44 have the option to start screening with a mammogram every year.
- Women 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year.
- Women 55 and older can switch to a mammogram every other year, or they can choose to continue yearly mammograms.
- Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live at least 10 more years.
